Sustainable green buses in Almere
8 electric buses are gracing the streets of Almere since 2019. To achieve this, a complete E-infrastructure was built to charge the buses. Batenburg Techniek engineered, supplied and installed this E-infrastructure.
Provinces, transport regions and the national government have agreed that from 2025 onwards, all new buses to be used must be free of harmful exhaust gases. For transport company Syntus, this was a good reason to invest in 8 new, electrically powered buses. Because of the short distances covered daily by the buses in Almere, the choice for electric was an easy one. However, an E-infrastructure had to be built first.

Transforming power & dormant charging
Batenburg Techniek opted for a total energy-technical solution: a transformer substation and the necessary cabling, plus 12 charging stations. The transformer substation was delivered in conjunction with Batenburg Energietechniek.
Batenburg Installatietechniek provided the engineering for the E-infrastructure. Throughout the development process, the focus was constantly on sustainability, safety and reliability.
The 8 electric buses now run on batteries that enable them to travel 250 - 300 km per day. At night, the buses are charged at the Syntus site in Almere Buiten. Charging at night ensures the growing demand for electricity is spread. With these electric buses, Flevoland is taking its first step towards green bus transport. The parties involved hope that this project is an example for other cities and provinces to make the switch to emission-free driving.
‘A step in the right direction’
With these buses, Cees Anker, Managing Director of Syntus, is taking a step forward towards emission-free transport. He confidently signed the contract with the Chinese manufacturer BYD, the supplier of the electric buses.
‘We see it as our social responsibility to reduce the impact on the environment. The deployment of these electric buses fits with the vision of Syntus as a subsidiary of Keolis on sustainable mobility.’
In line with the Energy Transition Manifesto
